Panel Calls for Depression Screenings During and After Pregnancy

Experts estimate that about one in seven mothers experience a mood disorder, such as depression, anxiety, or OCD, after giving birth. Since these postpartum mood disorders can be detrimental to both the mother and the development of the child, the United States Preventative Services Task Force recommended that women should be screened for depression both during pregnancy and after birth. The recommendations do not specify who should screen or how often, but eventually, more accurate diagnoses will lead to more women receiving better treatment.
