Misbehaving in school can lead to out-of-school suspensions (OSS), but research shows that high OSS rates are correlated with exposure to the juvenile justice system. In order to keep children in school and out of the juvenile justice system, as well as keep their classmates safe, Bridgeport schools have begun to implement social emotional learning through the RULER (Recognizing, Understanding, Labeling, Expressing, and Regulating emotions) Approach. Social emotional learning leads to safer schools, more positive school climate, and lower OSS rates.
